Experience, Integrity, Results
Paul J. Engel joined Bettmann Hogue Law Firm in August 2015 after practicing law in northern California for approximately ten years. A South Dakota resident at heart, Paul grew up in Madison. He served in the United States Air Force as an avionics specialist from 1991-1995. In 1993, he took part in Operation Provide Comfort enforcing the northern no-fly zone over Iraq out of Incirlik, Turkey. After the Air Force, Paul graduated from the South Dakota State University with a Bachelor of Science in Journalism. He obtained his Juris Doctor degree in 2005 from the Southern Illinois University School of Law where he participated in the elder law clinic providing free legal services to senior citizens, and the alternative dispute resolution clinic as a certified mediator.
Paul then spent the next six years of his career in California as an in-house counsel for two different national title insurance companies. There, he investigated, evaluated, and resolved a variety of real property title claims and escrow disputes. Paul participated as the company representative in numerous arbitrations, mediations, and trials.
He then went to work for a private firm in Walnut Creek, California representing homeowners associations. Paul specialized in transactional work for his association clients, which involved review and revision of construction and repair contracts, drafting and amending association bylaws and covenants, annexation of additional developmental phases, overseeing member elections, and enforcement of association rules. His work has focused primarily on the transactional side of the real estate field.
Paul has now returned to South Dakota to take advantage of both its natural and economic benefits, to raise his children, and to be closer to his family. He is currently licensed in California, and plans to complete the South Dakota bar exam this July.
